The artwork sold is part of Roiland’s crypto art collection titled „The Best I Could Do“. The collection includes several artworks inspired by the series Rick and Morty as well as other cartoons. Among them, for example, is the iconic American cartoon series „The Simpsons“.

Roiland’s crypto artwork, called „The Smintons“, is expected to go on sale later today. As of press time, the highest bid was US$188,137.

Shortly before, Nifty Gateway had announced the auction of Roiland’s collection on 13 January

The Rick and Morty co-creator is apparently an early Bitcoin (BTC) adopter, having publicly endorsed the cryptocurrency as early as 2015.

Nifty Gateway is a large NFT marketplace that hosts a number of daily NFT sales and is part of the Winklevoss brothers‘ Gemini crypto exchange. In December 2020, a Star Wars-inspired NFT work was sold on the platform for US$777,777. Previously, Nifty auctioned an NFT work by Trevor Jones called „Picasso’s Bull“ for US$55,555.

Crypto-NFTs have become increasingly popular in recent months, offering famous creators and artists a new way to sell their works directly to their fans. In late 2020, Sean Ono Lennon, a British-American musician, songwriter and producer, auctioned off a tokenised digital artwork on the NFT marketplace Rarible.
